6th Circuit Approves Cigarette Warning Labels and Suppression of Risk Information but Rejects Ad Limits (Reason Magazine – Hit and Run)

Today a federal appeals court upheld the new cigarette warning labels that a
federal judge in another circuit deemed unconstitutional last month. The U.S.
Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit said the warnings, which feature icky
color pictures and would cover half of each pack’s front and back panels, were
justifiable as a way of preventing consumers from being misled by tobacco
promotion. Judge Eric Clay, who wrote the rest of the ruling, dissented on
that point. “Although the government has demonstrated that an information
deficit still exists among potential tobacco consumers, which may render
warning-less tobacco products inherently deceptive,” he wrote, “it has not
adequately shown that the inclusion of color graphic warning labels is a
properly or reasonably tailored response to address that harm.”

The 6th Circuit also upheld the restrictions on information about the relative
risks of tobacco products that were included in the Family Smoking Prevention
and Tobacco Control Act, the same law that mandated the new warning labels.

Since Will begins the column by implicitly conceding that alcohol is morally
indistinguishable from illegal drugs, it is disappointing that he leans on
Wilson’s comment about nicotine vs. cocaine, which is frequently cited by
prohibitionists even though it is essentially meaningless. Sometimes cocaine
debases life; more often (judgng from, among other things, the government’s
own survey data), cocaine enhances life, in the sense that it provides
pleasure without causing serious problems. It is telling that Wilson picked
nicotine for his comparison, since he never could have gotten away with a
similarly glib claim about alcohol. Does alcohol debase life? Again, sometimes
yes, but typically no. This observation tells us nothing about the proper
legal status of either drug. Contrary to Will’s assertion, there are several
reasons to believe that the sum total of drug addiction problems would not be
much bigger, and might be smaller, if prohibition were repealed . . . It is

Quit smoking cold turkey … its the best advice I could give you when it comes to kicking the habit.

Using Nigorette is only replacing your smoking, if you really want to quit then your best option is to just stop.

From experience I have found that it isnt the stopping that is an issue, its the staying quit that will prove to be the hardest.
